About EASD

The European Association for the Study of Diabetes e.V. (EASD) is a membership-based academic non-profit organization. It was founded in 1965 and its headquarters is based in Duesseldorf, Germany. The aims of the Association are to encourage and support research in the field of diabetes, the rapid diffusion of acquired knowledge and to facilitate its application.

EASD is one of the largest networks for diabetologists with active members from countries all over the world. Membership is open to scientists, physicians, students, postdocs and fellows, allied health professionals and nurses who are interested in the field of diabetes or related diseases.

Annual Meeting

The EASD Annual Meeting is one of the largest diabetes-related conferences in the world. Each year, the scientific programme of the conference includes more than 1,200 talks and presentations on the latest results from basic and clinical science in diabetes research discussed by leading experts in the field.

Postgraduate Education

EASD is also an active player in postgraduate education having trained over 40,000 healthcare professionals through dedicated training courses and online education activities. With our e-Learning platform, healthcare professionals get free access to news and courses from world-class experts in diabetes research and care.

Statements and Guidelines

The statements and guidelines EASD is involved in have significant visibility and have, particularly concerning statements on treatment and diagnostic criteria, substantial impact on health care politics. Therefore, the Committee on Clinical Affairs (CCA) is responsible to ensure that any guideline or statement which is produced and/or endorsed by EASD is appropriate, non-contradictory and consistent with current research findings and best practice in diabetes management.

In 2000, the EASD increased its commitment to stimulate diabetes research in Europe by creating the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD). The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes offers support in all areas of diabetes research through a wide range of joint and stand-alone initiatives. Funding streams are available throughout the year and since inception, the EFSD has committed over €120 million to diabetes research in Europe.

EASD is the publisher of Diabetologia, a major monthly international diabetes journal with an impact factor of 10.46 (2021). Diabetologia publishes original clinical, translational and experimental research on all aspects of diabetes and related subjects, provided they have scientific merit and represent an important advance in knowledge.

The Association awards several major prizes annually to honour distinguished diabetes researchers and clinicians. The recipients of EASD awards deliver a lecture at the EASD Annual Meeting.
